The room was buzzing with excitement as I stood before a diverse audience of project & program managers, project professionals and team leads at the PMI Global Summit NA 2024. The topic on everyone’s mind was artificial intelligence (AI) and its place in the ongoing Digital Revolution. I posed a provocative question to the crowd: “Do you think AI is part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also known as the Digital Revolution, or is it bigger than any of the Industrial Revolutions?” This query sparked a spirited debate about AI’s potential to redefine our world. About 200 people attended, and I observed the group almost divided into two: yes, it is, and no, it isn’t! During my speech, I argued that AI represents something more significant, with machines gaining unprecedented authority to make decisions, marking a departure from previous industrial revolutions.
